Diversity and Integration
KBSS Engineering was founded in Karratha, Western Australia. A big part of this industrialised community is the diverse ecosystem of workers and residents from local and international backgrounds. The local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, has, for many years, been an integral part of the KBSS working culture. We acknowledge Indigenous people as being the original carers of their lands and the importance of preserving their culture and customs. As such, KBSS Engineering embodies the following three guiding principles:
We recognise and respect the local customs and practices of Indigenous people and their communities and the importance of these practices in preserving and protecting their culture.
We are committed to providing long-term, sustainable employment, training, education and business opportunities for Indigenous people and their communities.
We see that having strong, sustainable and respectful relationships with Indigenous people and their communities is crucial to ‘closing the gap’ of disadvantage between Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups.
KBSS has furthered these relationships to the stage of having a strong Alliance with the Ngarliyarndu Bindirri Aboriginal Corporation (BRIDA) of Roebourne and have worked closely together for many years. The relationship is one of mutual benefit giving local Aboriginal people employment opportunities and training whilst assisting KBSS Engineering to fill employment vacancies.
Globe Hill, a company of the Thalanyji people having Native Title over the Onslow region, has signed a joint venture (JV) with KBSS Engineering to set up a relationship with a local Pilbara Company that has a proven track record in the oil and gas industry, and who can also offer various services to the Wheatstone Project, whilst giving opportunities to the traditional owners.
A Commitment To Safety
KBSS are committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment to ensure a high standard of Occupational Safety and Health for all employees, visitors & contractors and sub-contractors is maintained. Management shall make every reasonable effort in the areas of accident prevention, control and removal of hazards and injury protection.
This is achieved by:
- Developing and implementing, in consultation with our employees, a comprehensive and effective Occupational Safety and Health Management Plan (OSHMP).
- Ensuring that all laws and regulations are complied with. Where adequate laws and regulations do not exist, KBSS develop and apply standards and word practices that reflect management’s commitment to high levels of safety and health. At all times, this is achieved through the consultation and involvement of its employees.
- Implementing risk management programs for the control of hazards.
- Providing training to ensure that high standards of work and safety are maintained.
- Demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement in occupational safety and health and safety performances.
- Ensuring that no task shall commence if safety and health standards are compromised.
All employees are responsible for their own safety and the safety of their fellow employees. The success of a safety and health programme is dependent upon the total commitment and cooperation of all employees of the organisation, including management.
The safety committee and employee initiatives shall be totally supported by management.
Our Commitment To Improvement
Wherever we are in the world, we have three priorities that shape who we are and what we do: safety, people and performance. We’re committed to supporting and developing our people and to driving new standards of achievement.
This focus on continuous improvement runs throughout our company. Whatever discipline or profession you’re in, you’ll be asked to reach specific goals – both as an individual and as part of a team. For KBSS, this ensures that all our people are focused on agreed business objectives. And we also ensure that everyone takes responsibility for their own performance. That’s why we want people who are ready to learn, people who are driven and determined. Our employees will provide the products and services that move our business forward and help us to deliver the essential services to the communities in which we work and live.
Ultimately, we look for those individuals who are able to focus on our clients, grow our business in innovative ways, think and act decisively, work effectively with others to achieve business goals, drive results, continuously develop their skills and capabilities, and lead our company to achieve current and future business goals.
Across our business, we look for leaders – both in terms of technical excellence and personal attributes. Our employees are experts at what they do and constantly find ways to develop their skills. We also want our people to inspire and motivate others around them. At every level of our company, people are accountable – they make tough decisions and see those decisions through. We want people who are professional, progressive, determined and decisive. Their leadership will make a difference now and in the future.
Learning & Development
At KBSS, we are committed to supporting the career development of our people through continuous learning. Through our learning and development platform we provide opportunities for our people to develop new skills and experiences, helping them to achieve their career goals.
For our people to thrive, we must continue to provide a supportive and empowering workplace, a working environment that is conducive to development and career growth. This includes giving our people the opportunity to learn and grow professionally through regular training and proven career development tools, as well as the transfer of best practices, knowledge and technology across our businesses.
We know that our future success relies on recruiting, developing and training both our new and longstanding employees. Our investment in our professional development and technical training programs allows us to nurture the next generation of talent by ensuring our people are well equipped to meet the challenges which arise at different stages of their careers.
We have implemented development programs which assist in identifying and developing current and future leaders within our businesses. As part of our succession planning, we continually review and recommend for promotion, employees who show exceptional leadership qualities and strong performance.
Attracting and developing young talent is also a priority for our company. We continue to develop new ways to work more closely with education bodies to attract young people. We work with schools to promote engineering and technology subjects at an early age, and partner with universities to promote our graduate opportunities and identify talented people.
